Welcome to our blog.

It is getting harder and harder to make a living with companies downsizing and hiring fewer people. Many of us have always thought about being our own bosses, or had an idea for a business that they never followed up on. This blog is a forum for all entrepreneurial spirits who want to try their hands at being a small business owner but don't know where to start. We want you to share stories about your experiences, both good and bad with the aim to help others as they start down this path. We all have something to offer others.

If you need help or have a question, this is also the place to come. No question can be too small or unimportant to ask. Whatever you think, don't be embarrassed or ashamed to ask, we all started at the same point.

Feel free to comment on what you see here. If you have something to offer others, like websites or advice, you are welcome to contribute.

Tough Work

The early days were hard and we seldom made even close to the vendor's fees. Twice we were hit by tornadoes and the rest of the time we tolerated rain, heat and a load of other trials and tribulations. This photo shows the aftermath of one such tornado in Niagara-on-the-Lake. An even worse one was Burlington which we were lucky to survive. I would have included a photo of that one but we went home to dry out and get some rest. My associates Ashley and Amanda still talk about it but not without a stiff drink in their hands. Indifference to what you are passionate about is the biggest hurdle. We look back and laugh, this is how you find the niche you're meant to be in. Selling online is less physical but every bit as challenging!!

  2. It sounds like you had a rough start. I know the problem I had or should say still have is getting started. I have a full time sales job now that unfortunately keeps me busy after normal work hours. Finishing up with that and then trying to find the energy to work on my own small business is very difficult. I am trying to get something started in time to be viable during my retirement ten years from now. I don't need to be a millionaire (although I wouldn't complain if I was). After a few false starts, I've hit on a tea business, selling high end teas and accesories through the internet, the mails and at local markets. Like anything, when there are few results, there is little incentive to really push hard to get things off the ground. But now that some money is coming in, there is the attraction of building the business through repeat sales. That I find is the best incentive to stay focussed on any new enterprise.

So good luck to everyone starting on their own ideas. I would strongly urge everyone who goes down this path to take comfort in knowing that the hard work will all be worth it.

  3. Yes, very interesting and informative! As a "newbie" blogger, even the simplest things others take for granted can seem a mystery to us!
